Step 1: The Exhibition

Questions about the exhibit:
1. What is the title of the exhibit?

Jonathan Rodgers: Complexity of life
2. What is the theme of the exhibition?

the theme of his exhibit is his view on a story of life and biblical worship of a protective god.

Step 2: The Gallery

Questions about the physical space:1. What type of lighting is used?

low/ dim lighting was used at his exhibit
2. What colors are used on the walls?

color of the walls seemed navy blue with the lighting but after looking at my images the walls looked grey
3. What materials are used in the interior artchitecture of the space?

there was very little architecture used just was blue walls and a few paintings and a few benches
4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space?

everywhere i moved my head there was a different work of art looking at me. I felt like i was being watched

Step 3: The Artwork

Questions about the artwork:1. How are the artworks organized? the begining of life was in the back and the later part of life seemed to be in the front. i believe this is because it shows his life now up front
2. How are the artrworks similar? all the works had the same style. like same type of brush stroke.
3. How are the artworks different? some works seemed dark like as in death but others seemed colorful like as living
4. How are the artworks framed? most were not framed but there was like one or two oil on canvas framed and all the drawings with graphite were framed
5. How are the artworks identified and labeled? they were labeled to the right side of the art work with the name of artist, name of painting, and medium,
6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other? id say about 3 to 4 feet apart from each other

Step 4: Art Criticism Exercise

Select three of the artworks from the show and use the Art Criticism worksheet to desribe, analyze, bracket and interpret the work using the 5-step Art Criticism Process described. (see the sheet in the module folder)

1.   Be receptive - I think he used great colors while also 

2.   Description – i see a angel (angel of death?)  going down stairs 

3.   Formal analysis – (form)  he used oil paints on canvas to paint a angel floating down some staris

4.  Bracketing - for some reason it reminds me something out of a scary movie 

5.  Interpretation - (content)  maybe at one point he was facing a life or death situation and he saw the angel of death coming?

Title of work: new beginning 

Media: graphite pencil

Date: 2006

1.   Be receptive - Keep an open mind.  Look for what is good.  No put-downs allowed.

2.   Description – a butt naked baby standing on a hand probably the hand of a god

3.   Formal analysis – (form0 used graphite pencil to draw a baby standing on a hand

4.  Bracketing - reminds me of the movie big but like the reverse effect 

5.  Interpretation - (content)  god created/ creates life and this is a new beginning for this child

Title of work: deliverance 

Media: oil on canvas

1.   Be receptive - hes perspective from religion and the birth of a new child

2.   Description – a child being relased from the hand of god going into the gap in the sky

3.   Formal analysis – (form)  oil paint to create the deliverance of a new child into the world 

4.  Bracketing - reminds me of a video i watched back in health class of a child being delivered 

5.  Interpretation - (content)  hes letting go of the kid so its like the deliverance of a new child

What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?

it made me feel like i was a art connoisseur looking at art work a figuring it out what it meant
